What is the difference between bleach powder and a hair lightener?

Bleach powder is a stronger lightening agent that works with a developer to lift the hair's natural pigment quickly - it is commonly used for bleach blonde results, highlights, and balayage. A hair lightener is a milder formula designed for gradual, gentler lightening, making it a better option for fine or previously processed hair that may not tolerate full-strength bleach.

What developer strength should I use with bleach for hair?

Developer strength determines how quickly and how many levels your hair will lift. As a general guide, a 10–20 volume developer is used for subtle lightening on light hair, 30 volume for standard bleaching up to 4–5 levels of lift, and 40 volume for maximum lift on dark or resistant hair. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and perform a strand test before bleaching.

Can I bleach hair that has already been colour-treated?

Yes, but previously coloured hair requires extra care when bleaching. Chemically processed hair is more porous and can be prone to damage. It is recommended to carry out a strand test beforehand, use a bond repair treatment like K18 or Olaplex alongside your bleach, and allow adequate time between colour and bleach services.

How long should I leave bleach on my hair?

Processing time varies depending on the product, developer strength, starting hair colour, and desired result. Most bleach and developer mixtures are left on for between 20 and 50 minutes. Never exceed the maximum processing time stated on your product, and monitor your hair throughout the process to prevent over-processing and breakage.

Is hair bleach in NZ available for home use?

Yes. Hair & Beauty Online supplies professional bleach hair dye and lightener products to both salon professionals and home users across New Zealand. Our range includes salon-grade bleach powders, developers, and complete bleach kits suitable for confident home bleaching. We recommend a patch test and strand test before any full-head application.

What should I use on my hair after bleaching?

After bleaching, hair is more porous and prone to dryness and breakage. A bond repair treatment such as K18 or Olaplex is strongly recommended to rebuild internal hair structure. Follow with a nourishing deep conditioning mask, use a heat protectant before any styling, and switch to a shampoo and conditioner formulated for bleached or colour-treated hair.

How is the hair bleach range at Hair & Beauty Online different from supermarket products?

Hair & Beauty Online stocks only genuine professional hair bleach brands- the same formulas used in New Zealand salons. Professional bleach powder and developer products offer more consistent results, better lift control, and superior bond protection compared to supermarket alternatives.
